Description

A Pap Smear is a simple and effective screening test used to detect abnormal cells in the cervix before they develop into cervical cancer. Early detection allows for timely treatment, significantly reducing the risk of cervical cancer and improving long-term health outcomes.

During the procedure, a healthcare professional gently collects a small sample of cells from the cervix using a soft brush or spatula. The sample is then examined in the laboratory for abnormal or precancerous changes. In some cases, your doctor may also recommend an HPV (Human Papillomavirus) test alongside the Pap smear for a more comprehensive cervical cancer screening.

This test is recommended for women as part of routine preventive healthcare, particularly those aged 21 to 65 years, or according to their healthcare provider's recommendations. Regular Pap smear screening plays a vital role in maintaining women's reproductive health.

Sample Collection Information
  • Volume Required: 10ml

  • Nature of Sample:

  • Packaging Instructions: The cervical cell sample must be collected by a qualified healthcare professional using a sterile cervical brush or spatula.
The collected specimen should be placed immediately into the appropriate liquid-based cytology vial or prepared on a glass slide, depending on the testing method.
Ensure the specimen is clearly labeled with the patient's full name, age, and collection date.
Transport the sample to the laboratory promptly according to standard specimen handling guidelines.

  • Other Instructions: Schedule the test when you are not menstruating, as menstrual blood may affect the quality of the sample.
Avoid sexual intercourse, vaginal creams, lubricants, medications, or douching for 24–48 hours before the test unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider.
Empty your bladder before the procedure to make you more comfortable during sample collection.
Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, have recently given birth, have had a hysterectomy, or have previously had abnormal Pap smear results.
Continue attending regular cervical screening appointments even if previous Pap smear results were normal, as routine screening is the best way to detect changes early.
